  1. RESCUE AT MUNSTER 
  2.  
  3. On October 10, 1943, the Eighth Air Force
  4. targeted Munster, a vital crossroads in
  5. and out of the industrial Ruhr.  A force
  6. of 274 B-17s was sent with the 13th Wing,
  7. composed of the 95th, 100th and 390th
  8. acting as lead.  During the flight to 
  9. Munster these bomber groups suffered 
  10. very heavy losses.  As they withdrew 
  11. their formations were scattered, making
  12. them especially vulnerable to German 
  13. fighter units who were looking to attack
  14. stray B-17s.  The 56th Fighter Group 
  15. arrived on the scene as the B-17s were
  16. set upon by the Fw 190s and Bf 109s.  
  17. Only the heroic efforts of Dave Schilling
  18. and Robert Johnson flying P-47s of the 
  19. 56th prevented the strung out B-17
  20. formation from being totally destroyed.

  24. As member of the 56th Fighter Group, you
  25. are charged with protecting the scattered
  26. remnants of the B-17 formation as they 
  27. head for home.  Many FW 190s and Bf 109s
  28. are attacking from all sides.
